NauticCalc computes the core offline — for live weather you bring your own API key (BYOK), from Stormglass and/or OpenWeather. This guide shows how to create the key with the provider, store it securely in the app and use it in your area.
Prerequisites
- An account with Stormglass and/or OpenWeather
- Internet for the request (the core calculators stay offline)
- Understanding: live weather is a supplement, not a replacement for the official forecast
Step 1: Key with the provider
Register and create an API key. NauticCalc does not sell a weather subscription — quota and cost sit with the provider. Check the free quota so nothing runs out silently while under way.
Step 2: Key in the app
Open Settings → Weather and save the key in the iOS keychain. Do not share it in chats or screenshots; if it is lost, create a new one with the provider.
Step 3: Use it in your area
Open Marine weather for your area and compare the forecast with your own observation. Without a key all offline calculators and the logbook stay fully usable — only the live request drops out.
Step 4: Add tides
Weather and tides are separate. For worldwide live tides you additionally set up the WorldTides key.
Common mistakes
- Setting the key up only at sea instead of at the berth with Wi-Fi
- Using up the free quota without noticing
- Mistaking live weather for the official forecast
- Sharing the key in a message
